Hi guys,

I am about to do some reconfiguring of my SL 6.1 box. With the new support in place in 6.1 "official" -- I'm going to upgrade some of my external harddrives from USB 2.0 to 3.0

What I would like to do is test the current performance first, though, then run the same tool again after upgrading.

I want to see any improvements, and I also want to make sure that something is not just completely configured wrong and I get worse performance.

Here's my problem: Too much info! I do a google search for linux benchmarking, and I find a million things. I just want something simple and straightforward that gives me a few scores, so I can make sure I'm not going backwards. There are some hits when I search yum for "benchmark" --- but again, to many to try out each and every one.

What would you use? I have rpmforge and epel both in my repo list, if there's something in there that would be on your "must use" list.

Thanks,
Greg

On FreeBSD people use bonnie and bonnie++. I am not sure if they are in SL repos though.

I found bonnie++ in the repo -- I'll try that out.

Cheers,
Greg

The easiest is:
CODE

hdparm -t /dev/sdX

hdparm should be installled by default
