I can't locate a current SL6 compatible FGLRX rpm anywhere in the usual repos, am I blind or is there really none?
I know I can install directly from the selfextracting bundle that is available from amd.com, but I prefer to keep all software wrapped up in RPMs to keep the systems tidy. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Not sure for which purpose you need it (I came across several sites releated to ATI), but I did find this package: kmod-fglrx. Hope it helps. -------------------- What is SL? - Forum Rules - Info on 3rd Party Repos - How to post images - How to post large text / config files

FGLRX is the offical ATI/AMD graphics card driver for Linux (closed-source). I need it to make full use of my AMD APU based motherboard, the FOSS ATI driver in SL6 doesn't even recognize the E-350 APU so currently I have to use the slow generic VESA driver. Anyway thanks for the link, unfortunately rpm.pbone.net seems currently unreachable (at least from my IP), I'll have to try later again. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Thanks, I had a look, unfortunately there is no current version there for RHEL6. In the meantime I found that the selfextracting bundle from amd.com can auto-generate a RPM for RHEL6 of itself. This is what I did: get the current driver bundle from AMD (the filename will change in future with new releases so check for latest version at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx):
make it executable:
run it with the switch to generate a RHEL6 x86_64 rpm:
this will generate a rpm file callled: fglrx64_p_i_c-8.85-1.x86_64.rpm install it:
after installing it with yum I had to run the following to generate a suitable xorg.conf file:
That's basically it. Not as simple as the installation of the Nvidia blob, but the fact that it can generate a RPM of it self is quite neat! ![]() The only drawback I found is that the generated package contains both x86_64 and i686 versions of libraries so it drew in some i686 library dependencies (9 packages) which I'm not happy about as I wanted to keep my system pure x86_64. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Thanks I guess that's a viable altenative, although now I have already used the method explained in my previous post. I'm not much a fan of kmod packages, I prefer the dkms method for kernel modules as it only requires one package for any SL6 kernel or architecture. The RPM built automatically by the AMD binary bundle uses dkms. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Update:
despite my preference for dkms (as opposed to kmod), I have now taken the ElRepo fglrx ATI driver packages and rebuilt them with the latest ATI driver release 11.6. The reason is because the ElRepo spec file is the 'cleanest' one I have found for the ATI drivers so it was easy for me to update it for the latest ATI driver. The packages (fglrx-x11-drv and kmod-fglrx ) are available as usual in my personal repo (see signature), currently in the 'testing' repo. The 11.6 drivers seem to run a lot better on the AMD E350 Zacate APU, the bugs I noticed in the previous release are gone. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Thanks Tux! I have switchable Intel/ATI 6940 graphics...the kmod stock driver from ELRepo didn't work saying it couldn't find an adapter...My experience is 100% with Nvidia...anything I need to do to run off the ATI card? I've heard of things like Switcheroo etc.
PS: Looks like you need the kmod package with those three -------------------- DΞLL Precision M6700: 17 inch NB//i7-quad w/USB 3.0, 16.0GB, Quadro K5000M 2.0GB DDR3, RGBLED //W8P64/Scientific Linux 6.4 x64

Unfortunately I have absolutely no experience with switchable graphics so I have no idea what you need to do to use it. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

joutlan, I just saw a thread on another forum about hybrid graphics on Linux with some links, and thought these could be interesting for you (I haven't actually read them since I don't have hybrid graphics hardware):

Hey, thanks for the links...I have time now to check them out!! Many thanks ![]() Edit: but really, I have the best of both worlds because in Linux it defaults to Intel.....but I would like to try out the ATI stuff.... -------------------- DΞLL Precision M6700: 17 inch NB//i7-quad w/USB 3.0, 16.0GB, Quadro K5000M 2.0GB DDR3, RGBLED //W8P64/Scientific Linux 6.4 x64
