Hi all,
i just wanted to ask all of you guys and gals, if anyone have particular experience with moving from SUN (now Oracle) VirtualBox over to KVM, particularly on laptop. If so, i'd appreciate any experience, tips, tricks .. my sit: - laptop - CentOS 5.6 as hosting system - VB 4.04 - windows XP (very importatnt guest), that is 'bridged' (this is also important - it has to be bridged, not nated) - different linux distros as not so important guests, using nat network connection I'd like to move to SL6 on laptop, but need my windows XP VM working too. I've already did some preliminary search and particularly i'm interested how the NetworkManager service would take care about br0 (bridging) service .... thanks You for any advice & tips you might have cheers, -------------------- |

I too am interested in converting a .vdi to .img/.qcow . I tried yesterday to convert a .vdi to a raw .img with VBoxMange to no avail. I tried to use:
but it spits errors back at me. That was my second attempt/method. The conversion is on my list of thing to do/learn and I will post back when/if I find a working solution and I will keep a eye on this thread until such time. |

I too want to convert a .vdi also. I'm going to wait until I finish a big job in the field on Friday before I start monkeying with it

If you are getting conversion errors this page might help.
http://blog.bodhizazen.net/linux/convert-virtualbox-vdi-to-kvm-qcow/ The comments go through some errors. Also the last comment has this one line conversion command. qemu-img convert -f vdi oldImage.vdi -O qcow2 newImage.qcowY Bridging on a laptop shouldn't be an issue but YMMV. |

Are you looking to run desktop operating systems or server operating systems? Is there a reason you want to move away from VirtualBox? I have numerous systems running KVM/QEMU, VirtualBox, VMware Workstation, and Xen, and have found that VirtualBox and VMware Workstation far exceed the rest as far as graphics performance goes. VirtualBox have an el6 repo as well, so yum can handle your updates too. If you are looking more towards server based OS' where graphics performance doesn't matter so much, then KVM or Xen are good choices as they lend better to being run as services.

For laptop. I know its not as graphical, but i dont mind cli, i just need some time to rtfm :-). But if someone has some howto, share pls :-). And i like having things similar on laptop like on servers, good for quick testing while idling in train etc... :-) cheers, -------------------- |
