I have installed scientific linux 6.2 on my netbook. I am not able to use wifi on it. i made a search and found out that the wifi driver comes with kernel 2.6.38 but sl has 2.6.32 which does not support my wifi card.
Please suggest a good way to use my netbook from my desktop which runs win 7 x64. i used teamviewer for windows but i do not like the linux version. Also, during installation i had specified the hostname as lappy but now it is something like dhcppc0:1. how do i change it? How do i share files with my desktop? i want my home directory to be shared with all privileges. -------------------- Arnav Kalra (open inside)

About the wifi driver, you need to provide more detailed info. Head for ELRepo FAQ #4 at :
http://elrepo.org/tiki/FAQ and post the Vendor:Device ID pairing of your wifi device. -------------------- ELRepo: repository specialized in hardware support for EL

About connecting from your Windows desktop, assuming you want GUI login, I'd recommend FreeNX. This CentOS wiki will help you get started:

You can find the details on the ELRepo homepage.
You do not need to install the repo. Download freenx and nx from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6/extras/ : freenx-0.7.3-8.el6.centos.x86_64.rpm nx-3.5.0-1.el6.centos.x86_64.rpm (replace 'x86_64' with 'i386' if your OS is 32-bit) and install both of them with the yum command. yum will most likely install other packages to satisfy dependencies. -------------------- ELRepo: repository specialized in hardware support for EL

Edit the HOSTNAME line in /etc/sysconfig/network to whatever you want.
cd to the directory the files are in yum install the-first-package.rpm the-second-package.rpm You can use tab completion to aid you in your quest. |

I am having a few problems with wireless on a fresh install.
I installed the kmod package. Networkmanager sees all networks but is not able to connect to my wireless network. I updated the kernel but when i boot up using the updated kernel i get a kernel panic. What should i do? -------------------- Arnav Kalra (open inside)

I solved the problem. My router caused it and a reset solved the problem.
