Perhaps a rather dumb question but what is the difference between a repository and a software source? I have read through the thread on 3rd party repos but failed to find an answer.

Many thanks

The software source are normally the source (src) files of the software.
With these files, you can edit and/or recompile and create your own version.

A repository, or repo, is a server where certain files can be found. Depending the nature of the repo. that can be .iso files, rpm files, etc.
You might want to check this topic for a list of 3rd party repos.
