Hi,
Could you help me resolving this error
I'm new on SL, before I was on ubuntu until it broke several times. Is it just a feeling or SL is less "user friendly" than ubuntu ? Thank you for answering |

First of all, you might want to explain that a little bit. What do you consider to be "less user friendly"? When answering this, please keep in mind that Ubuntu is aimed at a completely different kind of users than RHEL (and thus SL). Ubuntu has been created for the home users. RHEL is created to be used on corporate like servers. And as such, lacks the eye-candy and user apps Ubuntu has. -------------------- What is SL? - Forum Rules - Info on 3rd Party Repos - How to post images - How to post large text / config files

What I meant is that I never had any problems instaling something with synaptic whereas I have many dependency problems on SL. But it may be because my system is not well configured. But let's go back to the point: do you have any idea about how to solve my problem ? Please. |

The error you mentioned is related to the RPMfusion repo (not being able to download the file with the list of packages).
That might be caused by a problem on their website (which might be solved by now). -------------------- What is SL? - Forum Rules - Info on 3rd Party Repos - How to post images - How to post large text / config files

It's repo hell
I think you would do well to set up your repos to avoid conflicts by using priorities. I have posted my setup here - see link below. (Ignore the remi repo which is no longer required). Also when installing from linuxtech-testing: --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=linuxtech-testing atrpms tend to cause problems - best try to avoid. Anyway just to give an idea what I have done. So far I only had one or two minor problems over 1 year. http://sharetext.org/DPZR |

You have way too many third party repos active, many third party repos are incompatible with each other. I have only tested my vlc 2.0 package when using the official SL6/Centos6 repos and the linuxtech repo.
I would suggest you disable at least temporarily the epel and atrpms repo. Also atrpms contains an alternative vlc 2.0 package which I would not recommend as it will replace a core system library (libxcb) with it's own version as dependency (my vlc package includes a statically linked newer libxcb instead to avoid messing with the core libraries). -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Thank you for your help, I think we are getting to it but it does not work yet.
I think this error comes from the previous attempt to install vlc:
how can I uninstall it ? |

I'm not sure where your zlib package is coming from but it's certainly not from the linuxtech repo as I don't have any zlib package in it. I suspect it has to do with you previously having 'fastbugs' enabled and now disabled. To help you, can you post the output of the following:

Ok,as I thought you have zlib-1.2.3-27 (from the fastbugs repo installed) but you don't have the fastbugs repo enabled anymore (probably due to applying U308's config), so you need to either reenable fastbugs or downgrade zlib. My suggestion to you would be to enable fastbugs (IMHO there is no reason not to have it enabled on a desktop system). With regards to fastbugs see here: https://www.scientificlinux.org/documentation/faq/yum.apt.repo -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Although I think I understand your motivation, I disagree.
Because stability is also a good thing for homeusers (who simply want a solid system without any hassle). This is a choice that needs to be taken carefully (and everyone for themselves). -------------------- What is SL? - Forum Rules - Info on 3rd Party Repos - How to post images - How to post large text / config files

Fair enough but then please explain to pieniValkoinenHattu how to fix his currently broken dependencies without reenabling fastbugs. Apart from that since pieniValkoinenHattu has had fastbugs enabled previously, he will most likely have several other fastbugs updates installed so he will encounter similar broken dependecy issues over and over again. At this point the only solution is to either reenable fastbugs (easy and perfectly fine solution) or to downgrade all installed fastbugs packages (which is far from trivial). BTW, redman could you or any other mod/admin please move all posts related to pieniValkoinenHattu's problem into a separate thread as his problems have nothing to do with the vlc package or my repo (but are general repo config issues)? -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

My remark was a warning for others to think before they act. There have been too many situations here where others blindly followed peoples advice without knowing what would/could happen. Braking a system isn't too hard, reparing it afterwards is. Problems related to repos (either too much repos enabled including the problems described here) can take a lot of time getting solved. It requires a certain kind of knowledge and experience to solve. In my experience the fastes and safest way out of the situation described is a clean/fresh reinstall. Especially when someone is new to the OS he or she is using.
Wanted to do that but hadn't gotten around. Topic split -------------------- What is SL? - Forum Rules - Info on 3rd Party Repos - How to post images - How to post large text / config files

Thank you for warning me, I think I should have subscribe to this forum earlier...
I have not installed any package from sl-fastbugs. But anyway, I think the package zlib I have installed is (if I understand correctly the command)
I looked closer and saw it comes from:
So I watch where the conflicting package would come from:
I don't know the meaning of the error message:
But maybe the information I posted would be helpful. |

You do have at least zlib installed from sl-fastbugs. Version 1.2.3-27.el6 comes from fastbugs. Most likely this was installed automatically as an upgrade when you had sl-fastbugs enabled (and therefore plenty other fastbugs packages got installed as automatic upgrades too). You need to either reenable fastbugs, or downgrade all packages you got installed from fastbugs (but this is far from trivial). -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Like I said earlier I don't know any easy way, zlib is a dependency of rpm itself so I fear even temporarily uninstalling it (to do a downgrade) might cause rpm to stop working. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

I don't know where your zlib.86_64 package comes from but @/zlib-1.2.3-27.el6.x86_64 does not look like a valid repo name. At first you should try to downgrade the x86_64 version of zlib:
Otherwise yum install or update commands may not work if i386 and x86_64 packages have different versions. According to your post (output of "yum repolist") from Apr, 12 you have not yet upgraded to SL 6.2. This may be confusing for people trying to help you and may also cause depency problems with 3rd party repos which normally require the package versions from the current SL/RHEL release. http://www.scientificlinux.org/documentation/howto/upgrade.6x describes how to upgrade to the latest SL version. |
