Until recently, SL6.1 included e1000e driver v 1.2.20, which worked.
Hardware is Intel 82574L. Then it was updated to e1000e 1.4.4-k. This is not stable. See RedHat Bugzill bug #785228. Then I found and installed kmod-e1000e-1.9.5-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64, which updates the driver to the latest "stable" version. Its stability is overstated. What a mess. |

I had a similar problem with Ubuntu way back in 2009. Following the instructions in this post:-
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1127913&highlight=Can%27t+connect+to+internet+on+Intel+Motherboard+e1000e solved it. Post #4 is the relevant one. |

Thanks, but that's apparently not the same problem I encountered. They were dealing with pre-1.0 versions of e1000e. I have now gone back to v 1.2.20-NAPI and my three servers with this interface hardware are still online after 22 hours.

Some ELRepo mirrors now carry older packages in the archives. You can find kmod-e1000e v 1.2.20-NAPI here (for example): 64-bit: http://mirror.solvention.de/elrepo.org/linux/archive/elrepo/el6/x86_64/RPMS/ 32-bit: http://mirror.solvention.de/elrepo.org/linux/archive/elrepo/el6/i386/RPMS/ If they are not compatible with the kernel you are running, I suggest you file a request with ELRepo at http://elrepo.org/bugs with your finding that 1.2.20-NAPI is "stable". -------------------- ELRepo: repository specialized in hardware support for EL

Relevant patches have reportedly made it into kernel 3.4.4. I hope that the fixes get back-ported into SL6. How can I tell when this happens?

Cross-linking to this thread about the kmod-e1000e package. It may be a couple months before I am at liberty to try it out.

Just for reference the current version of the e1000e driver available from Intel is 2.0.0. ELRepo's kmod is also at 2.0.0. So, anyone wishing to run the latest from the manufacturer should give ELRepo's package a try.

As of SL6.3 with current updates (2.6.32-279.9.1.el6.x86_64), the e1000e driver seems to be stable on my systems, and I no longer need to patch or use a kmod.
