Came across this article which describes how a privilege escalation vulnerability allows root access: http://www.techworld.com.au/article/413300/linux_vendors_rush_patch_privilege_escalation_flaw_after_root_exploits_emerge
Good news is that only kernels >=2.6.39 are vulnerable .. so SL seems to be unaffected (still on 2.6.32). Even though I'm somewhat of a n00b and didn't understand everything in that article 100%, thought I'd share the it for those interested in this sort of thing.
