Hi there,

I wonder if someone can help me with my touchpad. I have installed Scientific Linux 6.1 from the live CD on my Lenovo Ideapad z460. The installation went fine and everything is working except the ETPS/2 Elan Touchpad. When I touch it, the curser doesn't seem to react at all and then suddenly it jumps and clicks randomly. sad.gif I also have Logitech Trackball installed which works fine.

Thank you for the link. I think I will try to disable "Macintosh mouse button emulation" tomorrow and see what happens.

So, I disabled "Macintosh mouse button emulation" and I can see it is disabled using xinput list-props 14 (14 is the id).
Then I experimented taking the values from synclient -l from my Debian Squeeze partion (with which the touchpad works) and setting them in Scientific Linux to the same values. I can change the values--I can verify that they are changed, BUT the touchpad still doesn't work. The cursor still jumps around and clicks.
So I made a fdi file and placed it in /etc/hal/fdi/policy to set the synaptics values that way, and then I rebooted. synclient -l shows the new values I set (the same as from Debian Squeeze). Then I disabled the "Macintosh mouse button emulation" again manually, BUT the touchpad still doesn't work . sad.gif
What else is there to do? I have run out of ideas.

Hi,
question:
do you use gnome?

the gnome (IMHO - i'm no desktop specialist and i use KDE if GUI concerned) setting take precedence over the X server settings.

I'd try to disable Gnome mouse/touchpad setting like:
CODE

gconftool-2 --get /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/mouse/active
(answer should be 'true')

gconftool-2 --type boolean --set /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/mouse/active false
(to set it to 'false')

Then restart X server and see what's up ...

gl & cheers,

I forgot to say, I run Gnome. It's a standard live iso install.
I tried what you suggested without any change in the behaviour of the touchpad. Just for fun, I booted on the live CD and got the same result. Then I booted on CentOS 6.1 live CD with the same jumping touchpad behaviour. So I booted on my Scientific Linux 6.1 install and tried to disable the touchpad with "synclient TouchpadOff=1". That worked at least!
The I tried to find some logic in the behaviour and it seems when (it happens randomly) the touchpad clicks, it hijacks the clicking function from the Logitech Trackball I also have installed, so I can't click with that trackball. Then when I get the touchpad to click again, the click function returns to the trackball. Can they be interfering in some way?
Well, I tried to boot without trackball but the touchpad remains jumpy and randomly clicky. sad.gif
I am almost giving up now. Any more ideas? Should I make an xorg.conf? Would that help? Or is it hal that decides over the configuration?

It seems to be something with the kernel version. I found exactly the same problem explained in the last post here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1606844
My only hope is that they fix it in 6.2

Hi,
dont give up smile.gif

As for my post above - this works, if you have xorg.conf created and you have the synaptic options filled in there - do you?

Also, if any of the above wont work (check that xorg.conf) we need to take care of 2 things:

1. kernel
2. synaptic app rpm package

add.1
check the 'kernel' version of subforum
there you can find howto compile vanilla kernel (3.xx), also, just recently toracat posted there link to newer kernels already packaged

add.2
recompile newer version of synaptic source package rpm from fedora

if you have q to either, ask smile.gif

cheers,

Thanks for pushing me forward. smile.gif

No, I don't have any xorg.conf. I tried to generate one using "Xorg -configure", but when I test it I get a fatal Missing fbcon or something like that. unsure.gif I didn't figure out how to get past that yet.
First I will try using xorg.conf and if that doesn't work I'll go for another kernel.

Thanks again.

OK,
np, glad to help. smile.gif
Anyway, as for the xorg.conf, if you need some help with that, i'd suggest to start another thread about it. We can come back to this one, when it's working.

and yeah, i agree with steps you have on mind - xorg, if not working, newer rpm prepackaged kernel, if not working recompile newer version of synaptic package, if this combo wont work, then we recompile cutting edge vanilla kernel and see ...

after that if it doesnt work , i'd recommend HW solution .. (hammer) smile.gif

cheers,

For the last alternative I have just the right tool--a two kilos sledgehammer. After that there will be no need for more configurations. biggrin.gif

I started a new thread:
