Since I just installed SL 6.1 very recently and did the updates, I have not transferred my saved files/docs/pics which I saved on an external hd.
If SL 6.2 is coming-out soon, is it advisable to just do another clean install or are the upgrades seemless over here? Thank you. |

You can just update, since it's just a minor update and nothing major. It's better to do a fresh install when there's a major upgrade. For example going from SL5 to SL6. -------------------- ![]() |

I would imagine "sudo yum update" would be sufficient to bring your system up-to date operating system wise.
You would only need to add/change repositories if the specific repositories have changes corresponding to SL 6.2 |

Hi there, good, relevant question ... 1. for SL 6.2 availability, check the official SL web pages http://www.scientificlinux.org/ 2. as posted above already by feed, you dont have to do clean distro install while you stay at major number: 6.x 3. to update it from e.g 6.1 to 6.2 the usual 'yum update' is not enough - you have to do: here is to official 'howto' on the scientific linux www pages: howto update SL from 6.x version to higher (x) release basically:
4. just for information: "sudo" command doesnt work on SL the way like on Ubuntu (and clones), you have to become "root" ("su -") to do update or you have to edit /etc/sudoers ("visudo" command) and add particular non-root user there and state which command he can run etc ... cheers, This post has been edited by helikaon: Dec 11 2011, 09:05 AM -------------------- |
