[note to Admin: repinned because we have nothing else, and secondly I'm always looking for it
]I'm going to pin this as one of the first things a new linux user wants to do (and many old hacks too!) is get their multimedia apps up and running like Hulu, Music mp3's and m4a's, DVD Playback, etc. Following this will enable all that functionality. The package list was taken from "RHEL 6 Essentials", the remainder has been my experience with it. I have tested the repos in the next paragraph and have had NO conflicts with these particular packages. Make sure EPEL and RPMFusion-Free are turned off or you WILL have conflicts. A quick GUI way of enabling repos is by going to the "Software Sources" dropdown in "Add Remove Software" under the Administrative Menu. First I install the following after enabling the following repos in addtion to the standard SL repos: linuxtech rpmfusion non-free That's it!
Then, install all the gstreamer plugins and other MM libraries.
Gstreamer-plugins-bad-extras will enable .m4a. This should pretty much do it.....please comment if you run into any problems/conflicts. After you do this, remember to return your repo settings to "stock". NOTE: This procedure does NOT work with Springdale-PUIAS Linux because of slight package variations! Thanks for this guide, but I sill prefer VLC. I don't use gstreamer or Gnome. So let's add how to install VLC: 1) Enable the rpmforge repo 2)
This will enable all the music mp3's and m4a's, flv, DVD playback for VLC. -------------------- thomei

Thanks for following up with that. Normally I do the same thing. Mplayer seems to work very well with SL6 though, so I'm 50/50 on those 2

Thomei...I believe VLC will play M4a's, but not Rhythmbox for example. You'll need the other packages per above for that. That's one of the reasons, among others, I took the time to make the original post -------------------- DΞLL Precision M6700: 17 inch NB//i7-quad w/USB 3.0, 16.0GB, Quadro K5000M 2.0GB DDR3, RGBLED //W8P64/Scientific Linux 6.4 x64

Just a heads up for anyone installing VLC . VLC doesn't play well with the libmodplug from epel repos. If installing vlc and you have the epel repo installed you should add exclude=libmodplug to your /etc/yum.repo.d/epel.repo , and epel-testing.repo.

Open package manager GUI, and look under SL addons. Excuse if you've done this....I've been VERY interrupted today on the laptop.Sorry, I came straight to this post and didn't know we had this many posts in it, i.e. didn't recognize it even though I started it (reading the thread title helps too!).... -------------------- DΞLL Precision M6700: 17 inch NB//i7-quad w/USB 3.0, 16.0GB, Quadro K5000M 2.0GB DDR3, RGBLED //W8P64/Scientific Linux 6.4 x64

Caught you napping I guess Here's the command I'm using at this point since this is the only package that won't install
And here are my yum repositories.
Maybe I misunderstand the Sl script part of the instructions, but I think I have what I need. All of the newest repositories are installed. Anything not check marked is an older version of what's already installed. -------------------- Glenn

Good Evening Glenzo,
The packages x264 , x264-devel , x264-libs along with ffmpeg and vlc all provide some */libx264.so... , all from the PUIAS repo here. gstreamer-plugins-bad also installs without issue here from PUIAS addons. |

Just to let you know I have a few new packages in my personal repo for those more interested in manipulating media files rather than just consuming them:
handbrake: an excellent DVD to MP4/MKV/H.264 transcoder This program allows you to back up and compress a DVD to a file of 2GB size that looks as good as the original. It's basically a GUI for x264 (the best h.264 video encoder, used even by the pros) and ffmpeg. k9copy: another excellent DVD backup program most useful to make a backup to VIDEO_TS folder on hard disk, it allows you to just select the main movie or to back up the full DVD with menus and extras. I wouldn't use k9copy for transcoding to MP4, for that handbrake is better. k9copy is a KDE program but it runs fine with Gnome too (it has a menu option that switched the look of the GUI from KDE to Gnome style). mkvtoolnix: this is the standard tool to manipulate MKV video files. You can use it to remux almost any video file type to MKV. All the above tools are in my 'release' repo (see link below). If you try any of my packages please provide feedback, even if it's just to say they work fine. ![]() I can only improve my packages if I'm made aware of problems, no bug report => no fix! Please note that I do not recommend mixing audio video codec libraries from other repos with my packages, as audio video codec package functionality differs widely between repos, many repos have libraries with restricted functionality. All my packages only depend on other packages in my repo and on the official SL repo packages. No packages from other third party repos are required to use any of my packages. Please read the README_FIRST file in my repo before downloading any packages and make sure you understand the legal disclaimer. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Many thanks for your time and effort, tux99. I have been thrilled with Handbrake and it was one of the first things I insatlled on SL6. However it is the prevoius version 0.94, which works perfectly but misses a few features of 0.95 eg. being able to rip parts of a DVD instead of the entire DVD. Your package requires gstreamer-plugins-bad. I have got gstreamer-plugins-bad-free (from sl repo) currently installed. I don't see a gstreamer-plugins-bad package from sl, only from rpmforge which I have installed alongside the bad-free version. There were no conflicts. By doing that I would of course be going against your above advice seeing the 'bad' package is from a third party repo. Anyway I have downloaded your 0.95 package and will try it out soon. Thanks again. Edit:- Perfect ! Did a rip using seconds from/to, Everything fine so far incl. preview. See sshot. |

You are welcome, but since I do these packages for my own use, there isn't much to thank me for. ![]()
gstreamer-plugins-bad is currently in my 'testing' repo (I'll move it to the 'release' repo soon, since I think I have tested it enough to be confident that it works).
Since handbrake only uses gstreamer for the previews it's probably not a serious issue if you use gstreamer-plugins-bad from another repo, worst case the previews won't work, but the transcoding should still work regardless. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Just thought I'd mention that VLC is another good option to rip DVD's to mp4, then use DeVeDe to make an iso and then burn to DVD with, in my case K3b. Very easy indeed.
