Tried for the third time to install not only SL 7.x, but the latest CentOS 7.2, both of them 64bit editions. I had to add lines to get both to boot to a GUI, when it installed, the GNOME 3 desktop was horrible. I had to install MATE from EPEL, to get any usability out of both. Both ran like slugs on my hardware, Thinkpad T400, 4gigs/ram, 160gig hdd, DVD drive and all the other TP goodies.
I see no reason to switch from my reliable 6.7 on both of the computers for the long haul. This 7.x version really needs to improve, and hopefully, the MATE desktop will be the standard.

So far I have not come across any problems when installing SL7 + MATE, but that was before RHEL 7.2 was released.
If you install SL7.1 and MATE right now, you will run into problems as described here.

Having said that, I have installed CentOS 7.2 and MATE last week without any problem.

redman,
Will the new SL 7.2 come with the usual goodies, i.e. the usual repos already configured? This CentOS 7.2 I had to go scrounging, as usual, for the repos.

If you do a "yum update", all configurations should remain.
With a clean installation, you will need to install/configure additional repos.

There is a change in the way how external repos are configured (as mentioned [here):
QUOTE
== SL Specific Updates ==
.External Repos
With SL 7.2, yum-conf files pointing to non-base SL (such as EPEL, ELRepo,
SL-Extras, SL-SoftwareCollections, ZFS) have moved to a central location.
Since these repos are not specific to individual releases of SL, the
separate location will allow for easier adding and removing of these resources
for any SL7 system.
To load a resource, such as EPEL:
`yum install yum-conf-repos` followed by `yum install yum-conf-epel`.
