I read in the SL documentation that you have install yum-conf-sl7x in order to upgrade to the latest SL release. How does the installing this provide the sources to upgrade to the most recent release? Because my sl.repo seems to be pointing here:

http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/$slreleasever/$basearch/os/ which is the location where the updates for the base OS(5,6,or 7) packages are. Just wondering cause I know in rhel you just update and 7.2 gets installed. I remember it working differently with SL because I read somewhere that with SL you can stick to 7.0 or 7.1, not forcing you to upgrade, only if you want to upgrade to the next release.

You may want to run:

yum repolist all

and inspect the output (or post it here for us to see).

thanks toracat. I see now how it works now.

sl/x86_64 Scientific Linux 7x - x86_64 8,685
sl-extras/x86_64 Scientific Linux Extras - x86_64 226
sl-fastbugs/x86_64 Scientific Linux 7x - x86_64 - bugfix updates 1,132
sl-security/x86_64 Scientific Linux 7x - x86_64 - security updates 1,674

Since I installed yum-conf-sl7x my sources are pointing towards 7x sources. Meaning my packages will be updates from the 7x location: http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/7x/x86_64/os
