Hi all,

Well it's been a long time since I posted anything, but I'm still using SL, version 6.4 now.

So here's the thing: I installed the new kernel that became available today (2.6.32-358.11.1.el6), and upon rebooting, the system gets to the smartd loading (so as far as I can tell, the last thing to load before X starts up the desktop) and then kernel panic. The first time some info was printed on the screen, but of course I didn't write it down. The subsequent times (2) I tried booting the system just locks up, with no info printed.
I checked the logs (messages, dmesg, xorg and boot) of course and can't find anything at all, and oddly enough dmesg.old has a 0 byte value.

I can live without the new kernel, although there are a couple of security fixes in this one, so probably best to figure this out.

BTW, this is a totoally fresh install a couple of days ago, and has all the updates available on SL, EPEL, and EL.

Best regards,

You might want to report this on the SL mailing list I don't think anyone here can solve this for you as we are all just users, the developers usually stick to the mailing list.

Are you using any third party graphics drivers such as the proprietary ATI or Nvidia drivers?
If yes then include this info in your mailing list post too.

Also it could be useful to give details about your hardware (especially what graphics card you have).

One more thing: have you tried to boot to runlevel 3 (text mode)?

My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software:
