Is there a way to upgrade iptables outside of yum?

I noticed the version available in yum and on the OS is 1.4.7 (which was released March 2010), but the latest is 1.4.21 released November 2013. We are running into some script errors and segfault errors on various systems that add and remove entries into/from iptables... and it seems these bugs are addressed and fixed in the newer versions of iptables.

We cannot do a "yum remove iptables" as it will remove a majority of the software needed on the system like php and so much else (one system was over 200 packages)...

We tried to compile iptables 1.4.20 from source and it configures, makes and tries to "make install" with no errors, but the files needed are never overwritten so it never gets upgraded properly.

So is there a way to upgrade or compile iptables to a much more recent version (with SL 6.5) without losing all the software?
