I have 30 Scientific Linux workstations, recently updated to 6.8. User home directories are automounted over nfs from a CentOS 7 server. Recently, all of my users who are automounted over nfs are not able to use Firefox. Firefox starts up, then freezes. Once frozen, the Firefox process can not be killed even with kill -9.

ps -elf on the Firefox process shows:
0 D testuser 21452 1 0 80 0 - 222039 fscach 13:42 ? 00:00:02 /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox
The D showing it is in an uninterruptable sleep state and the fscach being fscache_wait_on_page_write.
So Firefox is waiting for something, and it is related to my nfs setup, but I am stuck on what to do next.

My /etc/export file on my server is:

And the automount configuration on the clients being:
* -fstype=nfs,bg,soft,intr,rsize=1048576,async,wsize=1058576,noatime server:/export/home/students/&

The weird thing is that Firefox is the only program we have seen (so far) that is acting up. Reading and writing to the home directories is not affected.

Can anyone help?

Try sync rather than async.
