SLLinux 2.6.32-358.18.1.el6.i686
Nautilus 2.28.4

Oct 23 upgrade of openssh seems to kill the ability for nautilus to connect remotely via SFTP

This is the relevant section of my yum log
---------------------------------------------------------
Oct 23 03:35:50 Updated: openssh-5.3p1-104.el6.i686
Oct 23 03:35:58 Updated: openssh-askpass-5.3p1-104.el6.i686
Oct 23 03:36:00 Updated: openssh-clients-5.3p1-104.el6.i686
Oct 23 03:36:02 Updated: openssh-server-5.3p1-104.el6.i686
-----------------------------------------------------------
ERROR Resulting from SFTP attempt with Nautilus;

"Could not open location sftp://username@server"
"Error reading from unix: input/output error"

Problem disappears when I downgrade openssh to openssh-5.3p1-94.el6.i686

sudo yum downgrade openssh*

I see the same thing on my x64 laptop also running SL 6.

I can only assume others are seeing this - am I missing a better workaround?

Thanks
Zarsh

Hi,
i think this would be good to bring attention of devs to it.
I'd post it on SL mailing list.

I have one q. though - is this behaviour happening all the time to different version of ssh servers?
Can you try to connect to different servers running diff. version of ssh? (latest and older)?

Im using the same version btw., the 5.3p1-104.el6 and dont have any probs, but i'm not using Nautilus, because i run KDE.

cheers,

@zarshmogon:

I can confirm the same issue with the latest OpenSSH update breaking functionality of Nautilus SFTP. Initially noticed it following application of the update on my laptop. Then I was able to replicate/confirm the issue on a virtual machine.

I've been watching the SL mailing list over the last week or so and haven't seen the issue reported, which is surprising and made me think that I was the only one that was affected. Your report adds support that its not an isolated issue (guess SFTP via Nautilus isn't heavily used by those running SL6).

It doesn't look to be the first time an OpenSSH update broke SFTP via Nautilus (a report with identical symptoms and error message from late 2010):

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=820037

I've submitted a bug report to the scientific-linux-users listerv on Nov 03 2104. Hope it helps to correct this regression.

Thanks for posting this.

Sorry guys - work happened.

@helikaon
Yes I see this happening across 4 different machines all running SL6 with a mix of 32 and 64 bit (FWIW).

I installed Dolphin, and interestingly, no problem there, just with nautilus.

@halocaridina
Thanks for submitting the bug report - much appreciated.

@zarshmogon:

No problem, glad to help.

As for SFTP connectivity working with Dolphin:

If you follow links starting at this Arch Linux thread:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=820037

the problem turns out to be how OpenSSH and GVFS (which is the backend that Nautilus uses for SFTP) interact with each other. So its a compatability issue between the two that kills SFTP connectivity. This incompatibility doesn't become an issue since Dolphin uses a different backend for SFTP.

Cheers,

Halocaridina

Hi Halocaridina :]
i saw your report on SL mailing list - unfortunatelly noone replied so far. I think if noone knows on SL mail list, then only way left is report directly to RH bugzilla and try to bring directly RH devs attention to it...

best of luck,
cheers, :]

Hi helikaon,

Thank you for the reply. I agree; if no replies come from the SL mailing lists by the weekend, I'll open a ticket on it at RH Bugzilla.

Surprising that so few people have noticed this particular regression.....

Hi Halocaridina,

there's already a ticket at RH: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1157729

@waschk:

Thanks for letting me know that a report on RH Bugzilla has already been posted. I'll keep my eye on it as well as add a "me too".

FYI: upgraded a virtual machine and laptop this past weekend from SL 6.5->SL6.6 (i386 for the former, x86_64 for the latter) and can establish SFTP connections via Nautilus again.

So upgrading to the latest point release solves this regression.
