A slew of updates came out recently, including kernel, X and mesa. One of my users updated some packages (without my knowledge) and now her desktop won't boot to X-windows.

AMD Athlon64 5400+
Radeon HD 5670 graphics
using default radeon driver

Recent updates
kernel-2.6.32-504.el6.x86_64
mesa-libGL-10.1.2-2.el6.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-ati-7.3.99-2.el6.x86_64
xorg-x11-server-common-1.15.0-22.sl6.x86_64
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.15.0-22.sl6.x86_64

Attempt to boot to inittab level 5 ends in a frozen machine. Display is frozen, cannot switch to console mode, network does not respond to SSH or ping.

Setting inittab level to 3 allows non-graphical boot, seems to be OK.
Running "startx" causes same symptoms: display frozen, network response disappears.

Booting with the previous kernel (2.6.32-431.29.2.el6.x86_64) seems to clear up the problem, and that is how I have it configured right now.

Is anyone else seeing this?

I suggest you try the kmod-fglrx package from ELRepo. The latest version is now compatible with the 6.6 kernel (2.6.32-504.el6). Here is the announcement. Please note that the packages are no longer in the testing repo but they can be found in the main elrepo repository.

I installed new update kernel-2.6.32-504.1.3.el6.x86_64
but this fails to clear the condition.

Still running with kernel 2.6.32-431.29.2.el6.x86_64

It is expected that updating the kernel does not help in this case. What you need to try is to install the latest fglrx-related packages (version 14.9) from ELRepo as referenced in my previous post.

Yes total lock up,
I have NVIDIA with nouveau driver so don't think it's a driver problem.
