How can I download the "xypic" package for texlive?
It does not seem to be contained under scientific linux 7.2.

Read this post.

Read about protectbase and priorities. Or follow the advise mentioned in the first post. These two protections are useful.

Add the epel repo and install the package:

become root: via sudo or su -

yum install texlive-xypic

Thank you for your message.
I skipped the protection part, and just installed the EPEL package for SL7.
The installation worked and xypic can be used, however an arrow
\ar[r] (and all other directions) is just a line and not an arrow.

It would be useful if you told me how you start up xypi and what it is supposed to do, I have never heard of the package before today.

At the beginning of the tex-file, I use

\usepackage[arrow,matrix,curve]{xy}

Then, one can make mathematical diagrams, with letters and arrows.
For example

$$\xymatrix{ A \ar[r] & B}$$

is like

$$A \rightarrow B$$

The strength comes from more complicated diagrams, like

$$\xymatrix{ A \ar[r]^g \ar[d]_f & B \ar[d]^u \\
C \ar[r] & D }$$

in this case a square with corners A,B,C,D and lablled arrows between them.

Usually it works, but under my installation the arrows miss the tip of the arrow.
They are just lines.

I would think your mssing a texlive package that provides this. Try installing

texlive-mh or texlive-txfonts.

Other wise so a search:

yum search texlive | grep font

and see if anything familiar gets listed wink.gif

thanks for your message.
another guy who became now interested in himself in the SL distribution and tried it by himself told me to use "pdflatex" rather than "latex".
now it works. thanks.

again for all others:

pdflatex filename.tex
