Hello, my question is basically the title of my post.
I am aware of other means to install a distro on linux. But I want to install it on my external hard drive in order to run it from a MacBook Air.
I haven't been able to find a solution related to my problem. Is it even possible?
I would really appreciate any information. Thanks

In theory it should be possible but it's not the best idea.
I would not expect good driver support for macbook air at all to begin with. I'm also unaware whether apple products require signatures to boot a different OS in their UEFI? That may be another issue which would keep you from booting it.
As far as installing it to an external HDD, it should be doable with the regular installer or even USB Creator. What problem are you having exactly when you try to install SL to your external drive?
