Here is a question: Why cant RHEL/SL be more like Debian in terms of repo compatibility?

Why isn't a Ford the same as a Ferrari?
Both share the first initial and it would save a lot of money...

Obviously this is an old thread but I'll throw in two cents.

I've made the switch to SL from the Debian world for these reasons:

1. Familiarity with Enterprise
2. Debian does have bugs. Upgrade bugs, everyday ops bugs, etc. They are usually not severe, but they are definitely annoying, especially when it's supposed to be stable. I want stability.
3. I cannot say enough how much I dislike the new Gnome panel. I dislike what it is, which is a big immovable blob and eyesore, and I'm even more irked with the audacity of it. A panel I can't move? Can't get rid of? What is that about? Same thoughts with KDE's bubble. I can move it, but it won't go away.

Anyway, those are the reasons I'm taking the time to learn SL, Yum and it's repos. At least I'll have a number of yrs before I have to make another decision.
