My lab subscribes to a web application that requires Java instead of IcedTea.

As root, the command and first bit of the output I'm using to install the rpm as follows:

QUOTE
# rpm -iv jre-7u5-linux-i586.rpm
Preparing packages for installation...
jre-1.7.0_05-fcs
Unpacking JAR files...
rt.jar...
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.vQnXnK: /usr/java/jre1.7.0_05/bin/unpack200: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory
Error: unpack could not create JAR file:

/usr/java/jre1.7.0_05/lib/rt.jar

I'm cutting it off here for brevity but you get the idea. I know the instructions start from a .bin file but I'm not clear how to get there from the rpm. I'm running SL6.2 64 bit. I'm using 32-bit Java due to requirements of the web application for applet or Web Start and the advice on the Jave download page to use 32-bit for these uses of Java.

All assistance, greatly appreciated.

This means that you are trying to install a 32 bits package on a 64 bits system.

You need to grab the x86_64 file wink.gif

redman,

got it, thanks

don't understand why Oracle clearly says for applet or WebStart, use 32-bit on the Download page but they do

So I now have Firefox working with 7u5 and my web application is happy. However, openJDK6u24 came with SL, is still installed, and working with Open Office. They seem to be happy together for now but I wonder for how long. Should I be concerned about future conflicts?

Thanks for the help

Although I'm using LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice, both use/rely on openJDK.
So far I did not encounter any problems.
Shouldn't wonder about it if I were you. If things go wrong, you'll be the first to know wink.gif

Hello everybody

I'm having problems too in SL 6.3 x86 with oracle java JRE 7.7 browser plugin..

..the fact is that before this update I didn't need to do anything, JRE7 browser plugin always was where it needed (i could check it in the shell and in firefox plugins options) but now any web browser I've tried seem to unknown where is the browser plug-in located (they always did before without "my help")

I also need oracle java plug-in instead of icedtea. I used the .rpm binary f+rom the oracle site.

If anybody knows anything about this topic..

Thanks

Because of recent Java security leaks I've removed the java/jre package from all systems.
Not sure if 7u7 is a fixer though. But unless you're absolutely sure you might want to wait.

As far as installation goes, with all previous versions I always needed to manually create a symbolic link to the plugin.
I'm not at home right now so I can't post the command to create it.

No need to wait, u7 is the brand new update that fixes the bug:

Java plugin was not detected. This indicates that either you don't have Java installed or it is disabled in this browser. This browser should be safe from drive-by exploitation via Java.

Running 7u7, I get:

Congrats! You appear to be running a version that isn't vulnerable to publicly disclosed exploits.

All I can say, for what it is worth, if you do not need Java JRE, don't install it.

It's enough not to install the Java browser plugin (the exploits make use of the browser plugin!), the JRE itself is not a problem at all and therefore can stay installed.

Personally I haven't had the Java browser plugin installed for many years now and have not come across any web site that still needs it.
