Post the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log to pastebin.org and then post the link to it here.
Also please tell us what hardware you are using (brand and model of monitors and/or laptop and graphics card), the more details, the better. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Why is the log output showing 3 configured screens?
Can you also post the xorg.conf file to pastebin? Also what I don't understand is why are you using the VESA xorg driver rather than the Intel driver? With the Intel driver I would assume you don't need 'nomodeset' in grub, I think modeset should be active with the Intel driver (but I don't have recent experience with the Intel driver so I'm not sure).

Hi nyanyo, first of all your xorg.conf contains an invalid character, you used '×' (multiply) instead of 'x' (letter x) in the definitons of "1680×1050".
This is most likely not the solution to all you problems but it still needs fixing everywhere in your xorg.conf as xorg fails to use the 1680x1050 mode because of that. Also if you only have one external monitor then delete Screen2/Monitor2/Device2 as that's not needed. Also change all Driver definitions to "intel" rather than "vesa" or "fbdev". -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Please provide the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log again when X fails to start. Without complete error messages I cannot help you. You can always change xorg.conf back to how it was before (if you didn't keep a backup copy then use the one you pasted here in this thread), but IMHO you should be able to boot xorg just fine (at least only with the laptop screen) without any xorg.conf file at all. -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Ok, when you start X without xorg.conf does the external screen work too? If yes at what resolution? Can you post the output of: xrandr --verbose -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

I'm confused, you need to be more detailed and precise in your answers otherwise it's very hard for me to understand the situation and to help you. This xrandr output is showing only one screen at 1280x1024. Did you run xrandr when you had only the laptop screen on or only the external screen or both? -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

This what I show is only external screen!
In my case both screen didn't work! Or external or laptop! My laptop screen, when I work on laptop have normal 1600x900 resolution. And when I come to work and connecting to station, I can chose one in 3 possible resolution, what you already saw. This is case! |

Ok then, please post the output of xrandr -q when you are running with the internal laptop screen but also have the external screen switched on and connected (even if it doesn't display anything), without the xorg.conf file.
Also remove the 'nomodeset' parameter from the kernel line in /etc/grub.conf, I think the 'nomodeset' parameter is causing the Vesa driver to be used instead of the Intel driver. Reboot after removing the 'nomodeset' parameter. By the way is the external screen connected via VGA or HDMI? -------------------- My personal SL6 repository, specialized in audio/video software: http://pkgrepo.linuxtech.net/el6/

Also after removing the 'nomodeset' parameter you could try the following xorg.conf file:
(this assumes your monitor is connected via VGA, if it's via hdmi then replace monitor-VGA1 with monitor-DVI1)

I did : [Andrii@Andrii ~]$ xrandr -q Screen 0: minimum 1600 x 900, current 1600 x 900, maximum 1600 x 900 default connected 1600x900+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1600x900 0.0* It with my laptop screen and connected external monitor. My monitor connected to laptop station and I just put laptop on station and everything work. Connection is HDMI. |

Just for clarity for anyone else having this issue: did you use the mini xorg.conf file I posted in my previous post or did it work without any xorg.conf?
I assume you have pulseaudio installed (it's installed by default). My recommendation would be to remove pulseaudio as it's just a nuisance, but unfortunately removing it is not easy. I wrote a howto which worked for me but I don't know if it works on every installation. No, I didn't. Just removed 'nomodeset'. |
