I have been reading up all about setting up a hpc cluster for doing some computational calculations.

With the current hardware that I have I was wondering if it is possible to set up the cluster with the master node being extremely powerful in comparison to the compute nodes. I.e. having 3 or 4 Tesla cards present on the master compared to 1 present on all the compute nodes.

Every where I have read it states that all the nodes, master and compute, should be the same, except for the network ports required. Is this really the only way? Or can I have the master being much more powerful, it uses all this power then distributes the rest of the calculation to the other nodes.
