I would like to use SL for pen testing. I am going to replace Windows 7 with Linux. I am most comfortable with SL. Has anyone used an RPM for Kali Linux on SL before? I prefer not to use Kali or Ubuntu but realize that would probably be easier. I am not savvy with Linux but want to learn.

Thanks for any advice...

If this is your first Linux then I suggest you try Linux Mint instead. While Linux Mint will work out of the box in every instance, SL requires you to take a few more steps in some cases that though not difficult, you may find unfamilliar.

I won't suggest Ubuntu or Kali either. Ubuntu's interface called Unity is weird and hard to me. Kali, previously known as Back Track Linux, aims at security and forensics, not for desktop use.

joesmith11627,
I installed SL 64 bit in a dual - boot _ along - side Wind XP Pro 32 bit ;
that required no actual fine tuning after the SL install ,
on a 2006 DELL workstation :

Of course , your hardware may necessitate some configuration after installing SL.
.
On linux , there is every type of software
- free & opensource.
..
I highly recommend SL :
download one of the OS'es DVD image iso files : ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/6.5/x86_64/iso/
.
There is also a 'Live' CD that has a disk partitioning software on it (GParted) ,
in order to set up your HDD for dual - booting ,
if you want to keep Wind 7 also.
.
burn it in Wind 7 via a free - opensource software (good place to start the free_dom)
called InfraRecorder (info :https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InfraRecorder)
-download http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5
...
Best regards.

joesmith11627,
Kali Linux http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kali_Linux
is mainly for security testing http://www.kali.org/
QUOTE
"From the creators of BackTrack comes Kali Linux, the most advanced and versatile penetration testing distribution ever created."

and is now based on Debian , http://www.kali.org/news/kali-linux-whats-new/
QUOTE
"“So, what’s the difference between BackTrack and Kali?” you might be asking. Unfortunately for us, that’s not a simple question to answer. It’s a mix between “everything” and “not much”, depending on how you used BackTrack.

From an end user perspective, the most obvious change would be the switch to Debian and an FHS-compliant system. What this means is that instead of having to navigate through the /pentest tree, you will be able to call any tool from anywhere on the system as every application is included in the system path. However, there’s much hidden magic in that last sentence. I’ll quickly list some of the new benefits of this move."

..
If you want to 'surf' the internet securely ,
you might want to use TheInternetAmnesiacLinuxSystem (TAILS)
"... a security-focused Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at preserving privacy and anonymity.[" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tails_%28operating_system%29
It is a 'Live' DVD ,
so it doesn't get installed to your HDD & thereby doesn't leave any info on it.

Thank you for your responses. I was hoping for a big package that I could install rather than individual packages for each tool. No worries though.

Thanks again.

In addition, misuse of security tools within your network, particularly without permission, may cause irreparable damage and result in significant consequences.

those "significant consequences" often involve standing in a court room in front of a Judge
