I'm not sure the microphone is configured properly at all. I tried adding "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-s14" to /etc/modprobe.d/dist-alsa.conf and rebooting, but that didn't help skype (maybe I should take that out again since it didn't help). When I run alsamixer, I see "Master" and "CAPTURE", but no Microphone. On System=>Preferences=>Sound=>Input, I see Microphone and Line-In under Connector, and on the list of devices for sound input, I only see "Internal Audio Analog Stereo".

Any ideas of what I might need to do to fix the microphone?

This is a Dell Dimension E521, with the following configuration:
bash-4.1$ lsmod | grep snd
snd_hda_codec_idt 52473 1
snd_hda_intel 21391 2
snd_hda_codec 77649 2 snd_hda_codec_idt,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep 5122 1 snd_hda_codec
snd_seq 45509 0
snd_seq_device 5220 1 snd_seq
snd_pcm 66451 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer 17758 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 51724 12 snd_hda_codec_idt,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 6486 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 7042 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

bash-4.1$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

I had similar problem once. After a fresh install i had no mic. More Curious, a Fresh install with the same DVD (after the install with no mic) solved the Issue. blink.gif wacko.gif

I tried adding "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-s14" to /etc/modprobe.d/dist-alsa.conf and rebooting, but that didn't help skype (maybe I should take that out again since it didn't help).

Check everything on a global level: does the mic work with other programs?
If not, then you need to dive into the mic section.
If it does, then there is something incorrect with Skype.

The "options snd-hda-intel" is used for adjusting/configuring the soundcard (example), not the mic.
I would remove the bits you manually added.
