Hi All,

I am running Scientific Linux 6.2 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2 clone), 64 bit with Xfce 4.8.

Under 6.1, I was able to run the nvidia-x11-drv from elrepo. As on 6.2 I no longer can. These are the RPMs I am using:

kmod-nvidia-295.20-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
nvidia-x11-drv-295.20-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
nvidia-x11-drv-32bit-295.20-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm

Edit: 275.21 gives the same symptoms: Display not found

When I boot up, the X11 display does not open. From "init 3" and a reboot, I recorded both the errors when trying to start Xfce (startxfce4) and Xorg.0.log. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Many thanks,
-T

Xfce start errors:

Disable NOUVEAU driver

Add this to the end of your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst

CODE
nouveau.modeset=0 rdblacklist=nouveau

elrepo should blacklist NOUVEAU already in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf when installing kmod-nvidia

Thank you. It will be a day or two before I can retry.

What does your blacklist-nouveau.conf look like?
blacklist nouveau?

So that ain't it.

My blacklist-nouveau:

# Blacklist file for the nouveau driver in el6
# If the nouveau continues to load, run as root:
# dracut -f /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

blacklist nouveau

So that ain't it either. Did the dracut thing. Did not help either.

I can not win. :'(

Extra info: this system was originally installed as "run level 3" (or "init 3" if you will). It is called "server" on the list of install options. I then installed my kmod-nvidia and Xfce 4.8 drivers manually.

When this started happening, which was after my upgrade to 6.2 from 6.1, I had no video at all, including no nouveau drivers as (not) reported by the "rpm -qa \*nouveau\*" command. I had to use my Xfce Live CD to go and and download the nouveau drivers the hard way from pbone. So, I do not believe the nouveau drivers have anything to do with this problem.

And, I installed my nVidia drivers with the following command:

CODE
rpm -ivh kmod-nvidia-295.20-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm nvidia-x11-drv-295.20-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm nvidia-x11-drv-32bit-295.20-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm

So, I do not see the difference between what I did and what the "yum" example gives in the link you sent me.

What am I missing?

Thank you for the help,
-T

Solved:

Phil over on the ELRepo mailing list helped me solve this.

The post install scripts were not recreating /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Solution:

AFTER installing the drivers (they will rename xorg.conf on you), run:

CODE
ln -s /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and reboot.

Thanks to all that helped me on this!
